Would it be possible to add a way to save a template within a PBI Description field? Our rationale for this is to drive some consistency with the types of information captured (i.e. User Story, Acceptance Criteria, Definition of Done) and the order it is shown across different projects.

I'd like to second this request - this is something we would like to use as well.
A little text formatting capability in the description field wouldn't go amiss either - bold, italics, lists - the usual

This is an excellent idea. I would go even further to suggest that the Acceptance Criteria should work in a similar way as Tasks do on a User Story. That you can create a seperate record for each Acceptance Criteria item (or as Mike Cohen calls them - 'conditions of satisfaction') for a User Story.

As long as the templates are managed external to the actual PBIs, I'd be good with that. There would also be a need to select the template to be used, or leave it blank.

Some backlog items (stories) repeat the same formula (F.ex. error fixes). A possibility to create template backlog items with tasks would make things more fluent. When creating an actual BI the user could choose from template list or create a BI not based on any existing template.

It sure would be nice to see this. I currently keep "dummy" backlog items with our regular templates of tasks so that I can quickly copy them into a new backlog item. It would also be great to have an easier way to see acceptance criteria.
