happy I’m curious

Kanban support

Will there be Kanban support in a future version of ScrumWorks Pro?

If so, what kind of support will that be? When will it be available?

  • Hi hmoeller,

I think this is the first time I have ever heard the topic mentioned from a customer. I would be curious to see what aspects of Kanban you would like to see in the tool.

ScrumWorks Pro is pretty adaptable, in support I have seen it used for things I would not have suspected it could be used for. I personally think it would be an interesting exercise to see how much it would actually have to change to be used as a Kanban tool. I will be sure to mention this topic to the product owner when this holiday is over.

    Hi,

Kanban has became more and more popular and several teams in my organisation have stated or plan to start using kanban.

ScrumWorks can be used for kanban already now, but ScrumWorks would support much better the kanban process if following improvements would be made:

    1. http://community.danube.com/danube/to...

    2. Configurable status/workflow. Now the web client as such is quite good kanban board, but it would be good that teams could decide themselves the phases in their work flow.

    3. Not time limited sprint. This can be now tacled just setting the sprint length long enouhgh like one year.
    • Hi,

I would add one more thing that would be needed in kanban:

As a scrummaster/ product administrator I would like set limit for the number of items in each stage of workflow.

As a scrummaster or product administrator I would like to set the limit for items in each stage of work flow as a soft limit (warning) or as hard limit (cannot move new intem in the next phase if there is already maximum number of items).

We really need configurable lanes and other nice things for Kanban support. When is it due?

Hi Everyone. We're currently hard at work on Kanban support. We're releasing 5.1 in November 2011 which will *not* have Kanban support, but as a precursor it will have custom status states for PBIs. Building on that we'll add full kanban lanes (that are customizable) in our January 2012 release. WIP Limits. Web and desktop support.

Please post any specific ideas or suggestions so that we can take your input while we're building.

    Hi Viktor

Will that kanban line be own view or somehow incorporated into current Sprints -view? How do you get rid of sprint in case of kanban? Now I can run already SWP in kanbanish way with infinite sprint but that feels bit like a workaround. Anyway great to hear that it is coming.

  • Hi Jaakko,
Thanks for your continued interested. We're still hard at work on this feature. It will be represented in both the desktop and web clients. First, teams will either be Kanban or Sprint, but not both. So when you add a kanban team to a product, it will show up in the desktop client as a team tab, but the interface will not contain sprints. Rather PBIs will be separated by custom "in progress type" statuses creating your Kanban workflow.

In the web client, there will be a new top level menu called "Kanban". Kanban teams associated the product will show up there. The team's Kanban workflow will still be determined by the custom "in progress type" statuses and each status will represent a column. Team members can then drag PBIs between the columns to signify changes in status.

We'll also have WIP limits (soft, warnings) for each status/column in both the desktop and web.

As we get closer I'll try to post some screenshots for everyone to check out.

    Thanks again!

    Hi Victor

Great to hear that. Sounds wise. Is team able to switch back to scrum or vice versa to kanban? I mean our team started with scrum and at some point we started to think why we need sprints. Are kanban lines configurable inside product or server? Anyway sounds exciting and happy to see those screenshots.

  • Jaakko, it will not be possible to switch a single team back and forth, but the easy workaround would be to create a second team (one for sprints, one for kanban).

Kanban lines will be completely configurable (name of column, order, WIP limit) on a per product basis. So each product can configure it's own custom process.

Glad to hear that you're interested and we'll keep working hard. The anticipated release date is end of March.
