I'm getting a consistent error when trying to launch the Scrumworks Pro Desktop Client (4.3.0) that the Java Virtual Machine Launcher "Could not create the Java Virtual machine."
I'm running the latest Java (version 6, update19) and I've used the javaws -viewer panel to ensure that there are no old versions of the application hanging around. I've also deleted all resources.
I'm on a Windows Vista system using IE8 and Mozilla 3.5.6 - same result.
Any ideas?
Thanks, Tom

Hi Tom,
One thing to double check is that everything from the Resources and Applications in Java are cleared out. I don't know why, but sometimes going back in and doing it a second time fixes the issue. Not sure if it is just a java issue, but in my experience it is always worth doing again.
After that we can try to get some more information.
Is this happening on just your system, or everyone trying to connect to Scrumworks?
You may try enabling the Java Console before attempting to start up ScrumWorks, if a specific issue is occurring it should give us some error output. This topic covers turning that on: http://community.danube.com/danube/to... -

Hi Caleb - I double checked that everything from Resources and Applications in the java cache viewer is cleared out. Still no luck. I did enable the Java Console, but I don't see where the output goes?
This is just an issue with my Vista system. I am able to launch the desktop client in both Mac and Ubuntu, so I'm not blocked. Also, this issue just started happening, I've used ScrumWorks with no issues for the last six months. I don't know what has changed about my system that would suddenly cause this to happen.
Can you recommend another application that uses a JVM to see if I get the same error?
Thanks, Tom -

Tom, try the JIDE soft web start demos here:

Please let us know your results.
FYI, JIDE is the maker of UI components we use in ScrumWorks Pro. -

Hi Tom,
Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Java itself yet? You should be able to remove it through Add/Remove programs. That may fix it, but I would think that it would have issues with other applications too.
In regard to the Java Console. It should theoretically be popping up an additional console window as you launch ScrumWorks. At least, if it is getting that far. -

I went and removed and reinstalled java, but get the same result after reinstallation. What other information can I get you that might be helpful?

Hi Tom,
I will do some more digging. The hard part here is that the "could not create the java virtual machine" error should, in theory, also give some more information.
You may try opening up the Java Control Panel, should be able to get to it through the Windows Control Panel, I believe it will be the Java icon in there.
Then select the Advanced Tab. Under Debugging you should be able to select the 3 options. Then when you start ScrumWorks again hopefully we will get a useful error message.
If not, we should get something in the logs, which should be created. I will follow up with this post in a moment, I am trying to track down where these logs will be located.
Edit: Ok, this should tell you where to find the logs once created: http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/tec... -
